“One man didn’t build this brewery, it’s taken a community of friends.”Great Hops is a dream come true for our chief brewer, and Armidale local, Sam Martin. After graduating from the University of New England (UNE) with a science degree in biochemistry and microbiology, Sam moved to Sydney to complete a degree in dentistry – a far cry from his now life as a brewer.
While living in Bondi he met his wife Kate, who also attended UNE, and his foray into brewing kicked off. It wasn’t long until brewing began to take over his life and apartment, with kegs hidden in virtually every cupboard, and even under his bed. With three fridges in operation it was finally time for Sam to find a new place to start brewing so, in 2011, Kate and Sam relocated back to their old stomping ground and the property we now call home, was purchased.
While Sam’s experience in brewing has evolved with time, he has always leant on his science background by applying evidence based methods to everything he does. This allows him to experiment with different strains of yeast and bacteria, to produce the best beers possible.
Our brewery sits on a working farm on the outskirts of Armidale, so you’ll get to see our beer being brewed right in front of you while watching cows graze in the surrounding Paddocks. With brews like our AR-MID-ALE, a mid-strength ale, Black Mountain Banshee, which is our take on a dark ale, or our XPA, a pale ale that offers up notes of light orange and passionfruit – we’ve got a beer for everyone! For those wanting a light snack up at the bar we offer things like southern fried chicken, buffalo wings and loaded fries, or if you’re chasing something a little more substantial try one of our famous burgers with a side of waffle fries, or a taco stuffed with fillings like pork shoulder, beef brisket and spiced Chickpeas.
Offering up a relaxed atmosphere in our purpose-built space, you’ll be in the thick of where all the magic happens. So come down, pull up a seat at the bar, meet a few of the locals and get a taste of what life’s like here in Armidale.
